In 2019, WashU Medicine received a Physician-Scientist Institutional Award from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to support post-graduate career development of MD-only physician-scientists and build the national pipeline of physicians engaged in research. This grant, bolstered by significant institutional investment, led to the establishment of the Division of Physician-Scientists at WashU Medicine.
Ten other institutions have also received Physician-Scientist Institutional Awards, forming a national network to address the shortage of clinically trained investigators.
